After suspending movie releases, Disney shuts down all businesses in Russia

Russian-Ukrainian War: Following its decision to suspend the release of its new films in Russia nearly a week ago, Disney has now announced that it is taking steps to suspend all other activities in Russia, according to the Press Agency ANI reported. It comes after the entertainment and media conglomerate announced plans on March 1 to halt the release of new films in Russia.

According to VarietyThe Walt Disney Company is working to shut down all activities in Russia following “the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine,” a spokesperson said Thursday.

Disney has many linear channels and consumer product brands across Russia, as well as a cruise port located in St. Petersburg. Speaking of the company’s decision to suspend all operations and services in the country, the Disney spokesperson said, “Given the relentless assault on Ukraine and the escalating humanitarian crisis, we “Let’s take steps to suspend all other businesses in Russia. This includes content and product licensing, Disney Cruise Line operations, National Geographic magazine and touring, local content productions, and linear channels.”

The spokesperson added, “Some of these commercial activities may be discontinued immediately. Others, such as linear channels and certain content and product licenses, will take time given contractual complexities.”

While activities are on pause given the current situation, Russian-based personnel will continue to be employed, in accordance with the ANI report.

“Even as we suspend these activities, we remain committed to our dedicated colleagues in Russia, who will remain employed. And we continue to work with our NGO partners to provide emergency and other much-needed assistance to refugees,” the statement said. Disney press release.

Amid the current crisis in Ukraine, Russia has suffered an economic backlash. In response to the invasion of the country, several entertainment companies, including Amazon, Netflix and WarnerMedia, Sony Music decided to suspend or withdraw their activities in Russia entirely, while all major studios, including Paramount Pictures, announced that they would stop broadcasting their films in the country. . Additionally, major companies like Microsoft, Apple and Dell have suspended sales in Russia.
